Politics: Attahiru Jega’s Promise

Posted on 19/02/2011

The former Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano state Nigeria, Prof. Attahiru Jega has promised to conduct a free and fair election adding that he would not tolerate corruption in INEC.

The INEC chairman, a former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), made the promise to the Nigerian senate while answering questions during his long screening excise.

Prof. Jega also said that that no amount of money can buy his conscience adding that ‘I am not for sale, I won’t take bribes.’

‘We’ll make sure we put square pegs in square holes. There’ll be no tolerance for corruption.’ He further said.

On his relationship with the president if confirmed, Jega stated that he does not envisage that the presidency would try to interfere with his job just like other previous INEC bosses, stating that their relationship will be as defined by the law.

He also stated that he would work with the police and other security agents in order to give Nigerians and international community credible, free and fair elections.

‘’The success of elections is a partnership, we will liaise with the police to examine the past problems in order to ensure the mistakes of the past are not repeated,’’ Jega stated.

We have heard him. We hope he will not change his spots. There must be something in the water that they drink in Abuja – it never takes too long before people start speaking in tongues that only they understand. They start speaking a certain kind of ‘Esperanto’ that only political office holders understand, and they become deaf to all outside comments, they refuse to read newspapers and they become aliens in their own country! Attahiru Jega, we will remember those promises when the dye is cast! And we shall remind you. May God guide you. Viva Nigeria!
